Confusingly enough, Maryland Heights is located in West Virginia (Harper’s Ferry). The place has massive appeal primarily because of its location along the confluence of the Potomac and Shenandoah river. There is a ton of historic charm in the town just across the lock. Here is an excerpt from the Maryland Heights website that will do it more justice than I can:
THE LOWER TOWN HISTORIC DISTRICT sits on the point of land where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers converge. It was here that George Washington convinced the Federal Government to build an Armory & Arsenal, and it was here that John Brown led his ill-fated raid of October 16, 17, and 18, 1859. Several park exhibits and museums occupy restored 19th century buildings in the Lower Town today. [View a Lower Town Map & Guide].
Being a “toursy” spot primarily because of the little historic district there are quite a few people around. I wouldn’t take this hike if you were looking for a little solitude. However, if you are looking for a “quaint” experience with OK views and historic presence, I definitely recommend this hike. Its fun for what it is, but don’t go looking to get a great workout in because its really not that strenuous.
